Marta Kostyuk and Taylor Townsend meet in the second round of WTA Guadalajara on Wednesday, September 16, at 23:00 UTC. Kostyuk is rightly favourite, but the ranking gap is doing rather a lot of work while her right wrist remains unverified.
Rest for Kostyuk, rhythm for Townsend
Kostyuk has not competed since pushing world No. 6 Linda Noskova through a 5-7, 7-5, 4-6 contest at the US Open. Her movement and resistance were excellent, although she later said wrist pain had restricted her shot selection; the layoff may have helped, but this is the first proper test.
Townsend is already acquainted with the court after recovering to beat Tatjana Maria 6-7(0), 6-3, 6-2. She also defeated No. 13 Diana Shnaider in New York, using the left-handed serve and regular net approaches to prevent a comfortable baseline rhythm.
The extra ball should protect Townsend’s margin
That variety matters here. Wide serves, low volleys and repeated changes of contact point can expose any remaining hesitation in Kostyuk’s wrist, particularly on stretched returns and passing shots.
Kostyuk has won both previous meetings and still has the cleaner baseline game. Townsend does not need to overturn that history, however: +4.5 games covers every three-set match and tight straight-set defeats such as 6-4, 6-4. With one player match-sharp and the other returning from rehabilitation, the cushion looks generous.
