Jessica Pegula and Elena Gabriela Ruse open the US Open on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday at 16:05 UTC, in the first round. Pegula is ranked third, Ruse sixty-third, and neither the seeding nor the crowd is in dispute. The interesting question is how many games the favourite needs to state the obvious.
Deep runs against an unfinished match
Pegula arrives from a heavy North American block: 7-5 4-6 6-4 over Swiatek and a deciding-set tiebreak against Anisimova in Cincinnati, then a flat final against Gauff. The pattern in all of it is consistent. She beat Frech in Washington and again in Toronto only after correcting a slow opening, and she admitted to being emotionally drained by the end of the swing.
Ruse ran through Stearns 6-0 7-5 and Linette 6-0 6-3 on hard courts this month, which is the version of her that hits through the court off serve and forehand. She then retired against Eala with a right-ankle problem and has not completed a match since. Her first-serve percentage and her double faults remain the reason she cannot sustain it.
Where the games come from
The line assumes a two-set win by roughly a break a set, which requires Pegula to be sharp from the first return game. Recent evidence says she usually is not. A set that reaches 6-4, 7-5 or a tiebreak clears the number on its own, and any set Ruse steals clears it comfortably.
The risk is honest: Ruse's serve can collapse in clusters against an elite returner, and the ankle allows for a short, one-sided evening. The Over only needs a normally competitive opener.
