Bartunkova and Vidmanova meet in the Monterrey quarterfinal, and the market has made its mind up early: 1.55 against 2.447, built on the ranking gap and two Bartunkova wins on hard courts last year. The week that has just happened tells a narrower story.
Two very different routes to the last eight
Vidmanova began in qualifying, survived a three-set examination from Udvardy, then removed Birrell and Buksa without needing a deciding set. The win over Buksa was top-40 level and came from her return games and her handling of set endings rather than from anything spectacular on serve. Against Birrell she took the tiebreak without fuss.
Bartunkova has the higher ceiling and the wider toolkit, with short crosscourt angles, drop shots and regular trips forward. The level inside a match moves around, though, and the closing has been the recurring issue: match points wasted in Prague, uneasy finishes in Cincinnati and again in the first round here.
Why the underdog price looks short
Vidmanova's most useful habit in Monterrey has been the immediate reply. Almost every time she lost serve this week she broke straight back, never letting an opponent build a lead on the scoreboard. Against a player who hesitates when serving out sets, that habit is worth more than a ranking difference.
The two previous meetings belong to a different version of Vidmanova, one who had not yet reached a final in Memphis or beaten this calibre of opponent. She is playing for a first tour-level semifinal; Bartunkova is here as US Open preparation. At this price the value sits with the qualifier.
Prediction: Vidmanova to win, odds 2.45
